Tiger’s back-to-back bogeys.
In 2005, Tiger Woods and Chris DiMarco gave us a Masters for the ages. It was Sunday. The 16th hole. Par three, 170 yards.
You probably remember the electric excitement when Tiger chipped in for birdie. It was such an incredible shot that we forget the horrible shot that put him there.
Tiger had blasted an 8-iron over the green, leaving a tough chip onto a downhill slope.
His caddie, Steve Williams, said, “We were just trying to escape with a three.”
With that Hail Mary chip on 16, Tiger took a two-stroke lead—but he gave one back with a bogey on 17. Then on 18, his approach crashed into a greenside bunker.
Back-to-back bogeys coming down the stretch. It was unbelievable.
“He hit it terrible out there today!”
After Tiger won the playoff, everyone wanted to talk about that chip on 16. But that’s not what impressed Chris DiMarco. Chris expected miracles from Tiger.
